About

I'm an academic researcher studying technology--mostly mobile and energy technology, and mostly in emerging markets.

Now
I currently work with Caribou Digital, a small research and consultancy group focused on creating more inclusive digital economies in emerging markets.

I'm a member of the Berkeley Roundtable for the International Economy (BRIE) and a sometime collaborator with the Research Institute on the Finnish Economy (ETLA).

Previously
I received my Ph.D. in geography from University of California, Davis, with a research focus on the mobile industry. My publications focus on mobile platforms, firm strategy, and the app economy, exploring how the combination of technological and socioeconomic structures shape value creation and value capture.

Before that, I spent 12 years working as an independent consultant, primarily in the energy sector, including as an Emerging Venture Analyst for the UC Davis Program for International Energy Technologies. I earned a Master's of Science in Community Development, also at UC Davis, with research on affordable solar lighting in emerging markets.

I have a background in both digital and physical product design, and have taught user-centered design workshops to a wide range of audiences. My experience includes UI/UX for online applications as well as hardware design of small-scale solar technology products. I've co-founded a several start-ups around energy and education, though my favorite job has been coaching college club water polo.

I love to play frisbee, and I live in San Jose, California.
